Researchers investigated the effects of continuous add-on via wet on wet padding on the performance of finished fabrics. An industrial pad batch dyeing machine dyed a 50/50 polyester/rayon woven fabric with a double vinyl sulfone reactive dye in an alkaline dyebath containing a wetting agent and defoaming agent. Dimethyloldi-hydroxyethyleneurea was the resin finish. A spectrophotometer measured samples throughout the padding process. Reflectance measurements calculated K/S values, which determined depth of shade. The wet on wet method yielded a stable dyebath concentration in pad batch dyeing and a continuous resin add-on of approximately 6 percent in resin finishing. The shade depth and add-on data indicated the suitability of the process for prewetting processes. 11 refs.
