Rinsing during reactive dyeing of cellulosic substrates accounts for 80 percent of water consumption, 90 percent of energy consumption, and 70 percent of the time of the total process. Textile machine manufacturers at ITMA 1995 introduced a variety of machines with smart rinsing systems that meter fresh hot water into the dyeing machine to dilute fabric contaminants and remove dyes and processing chemicals through low level overflow weirs. Smart rinsing systems accelerate the dyeing process, use water more efficiently, and provide a rational approach to processing stages typically left to subjective judgment. An overview of the operations, variables, and applications of smart rinsing systems addresses drain and fill rinsing, overflow or flood rinsing, combined cooling and rinsing, rinsing after pretreatment, rinsing after dye fixation, influence of flow rate and temperature, and load to unload cycle times. 5 refs.
