An experiment investigating the electron transfer from excited Hypocrellin A (HA) into the conduction band of a colloid CdS semiconductor used the dye HA as a sensitizer. CdS colloids quenched the fluorescence emission of the sensitizing dye HA due to electron transfer from the excited singlet state of HA to the conduction band of colloidal CdS. Fluorescence lifetime measurement established an electron transfer rate constant of 940 ((moles per liter)-1). Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the electron transfer mechanism. 22 refs.
