Since 1970 studies have shown that the small radius of microfibers causes problems in dyeing and reduces colorfastness. The effects of stagnant solution layer surrounding the fibers on the dyeing rate is heater for microfibers than for conventional fibers. Uneven dyeing is attributable to the uneven flow rate of dye liquor through the fiber assemblies. The smaller radii of microfibers reduces shade depth, The greater total surface area reduces colorfastness after heat setting. Factors affecting thermomigration include fiber structure, cross section, and denier; chemical structure, cross section, and denier; chemical structure of the disperse dye; amount of dye on the fiber; and finishing conditions. Benzodifurandione dyes perform well on polyester microfibers. 11 refs.
