A single cycle stress test (UK-TO) determines the degree of fading of a substrate after multiple launderings in conventional bleach containing detergents. A study using tetra acetyl ethylene diamine as a bleach activator tested 64 vat, sulfur, direct, and reactive dyed cotton fabrics. Vat dyes did not fade. Azoic dyes faded, especially orange and red shades. Sulfur dyes faded, but cationic aftertreatment reduced fading. Direct dyes showed a poor correlation between the UK-TO test and 20 machine launderings. Reactive dye fading depended on dye chemical structure.
