Sodium hydroxide manufactured in mercury cells via the electrolytic method and used in scouring, bleaching, mercerizing, vat dyeing, and naphthol dyes is accompanied by traces of mercury that sometimes remain in the finished fabric. Cadmium accompanies zinc salts in zinc acetate catalysts used with silicone softeners, zinc nitrate catalysis in wrinkle resistant finishing, and zinc chloride double salts of diazotized bases. Metal complex dyes, fixing agent, oxidizing agents for vat and sulfur dyes, and chrome mordants for wool dyeing leave residual metal compounds in dyebaths and dyeing plant effluent. Saliva and perspiration leach chromium from dyed woolen fabrics. An overview of metal compounds associated with textile dyeing and printing addresses dichromate in vat, sulfur, mineral, khaki, and aniline black dyeing, as well as oxidizing and reducing agents.
