Ink jet printing and microencapsulation require the formation of uniform drops. The formation of satellite drops is a nonlinear phenomenon initiated by the growth of higher harmonics. A study to quantify effect of viscoelasticity on drop formation in well characterized extensional hardening fluids analyzed jet breakup resulting from a forced disturbance of dilute polyethylene oxide solutions, Extensional hardening was the principal rheological behavior in the formation or suppression of satellite drops in jet breakup. Extensional hardening fluids formed satellite drops at large wavelength to jet diameter ratios. Extensional hardening retarded the growth of higher harmonics. an increase in the relaxation time of the fluid increased the suppression of higher harmonics. Frequency and relaxation time were suitable for controlling satellite drop formation. 9 refs.
