Researchers investigated the effects of adding different quinoid redox mediators to anaerobically incubated cultures of different species of bacteria on azo dye reduction. Anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) and 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (lawsone) resulted in the highest increase in azo dye reduction. Sphingomonas xenophaga BN6 and Escherichia coli K 12 reduced the quinones under anaerobic condition. Assays of the reduced form of AQS, lawsone, and other quinones indicated that the redox potentials of the quinones correlated with the azo dye reduction rates. The addition of AQS and lawsone also increased azo reduction ability of unacclimated wastewater sludge . Powdered henna plant leaves were a suitable substitute for chemically pure lawsone. 40 refs.
