An overview of dyes and dyeing principles addresses dye molecular structure; commercial dye composition; dye selection; dyeing methods: dyebath preparation; fabric preparation; and direct, exhaust, and continuous dyeing methods. Factors involved in selecting a dye for a fabric include fiber type, fabric structure, required degree of levelness, required fastness properties, dyeing method, costs, and desired color. Dye exhaustion is the mass of dye taken up by the fabric divided by the initial mass of dye in the dyebath. The slope of a dye exhaustion curve defines the dyeing rate at any instant during the dyeing process. Substantivity is the attraction between the dye and the fiber that makes the fiber selectively absorb the dye. Factors in direct exhaust dyeing are dye exhaustion, liquor to product ratio, dyeing rate, strike, migration, leveling, dyebath temperature, and dye compatibility. 4 refs.
