Elastane yarns account for 1-30 percent of raw materials in elastane apparel fabrics. Elastane yarn production is expected to increase by at least 10 percent annually through 2007. DyStar estimates that 35-40 percent of all apparel in developed markets contains some elastane fiber. Elastomeric fibers are sensitive to high temperatures, fabric tension, and degradation by chemical and biological agents. Polyester/elastane blends are difficult to dye because disperse dyes used for polyester fibers require dyeing temperatures of 130 degrees centigrade and elastane fibers begin to lose elasticity at 115 degrees centigrade. Dyeing polyester/elastane blends at 115 degrees centigrade results in incomplete dye penetration, barre, reduced color yield, and reduced colorfastness. Using cationic dyeable polyester minimizes these problems but increases costs. DuPont's Easy Set Lycra fibers can be heat set at lower temperatures than conventional elastane fibers. 2 refs.
