An introduction to textile dyeing provides definitions and examples of dye molecular structure and addresses such topics as the historical background of fibers and dyeing, development of manmade dyes and fibers, fiber classification, fiber and fabric manufacturing processes, color perception, colorants, dyes, pigments, and dye classification and nomenclature. Fabric dyeing dates back to 3,000 BC using such natural fibers as linen, cotton, silk, and wool and dyes manufactured from plants, animals, and minerals. William Perkin developed the first manmade dye in 1856. The first manmade dyes were cationic dyes that had brilliant colors but poor lightfastness and washfastness. Fabric dyeing transfers colored chemicals or chemical precursors from an aqueous solution onto fiber surfaces where diffusion into the fiber occurs. 3 refs.
