Instrumental color difference measurements eliminate the differences in color measurements arising from differences in human color vision and viewing conditions. Color difference equations reveal the degree of metamerism of a sample when the illuminant changes and whether a sample is an acceptable match to a target color. An overview of color differences and colorant formulation addresses color difference equations; CIELab hue and chromaticity differences; the CMC system that converts CIELab color data into a color difference value; shade sorting; and such aspects of colorant formulation as spectrophotometric matching, simple matrix algebra solutions of simultaneous equations, and tristimulus matching. 8 refs.
