Denim fabric construction is explained and the normal processing methods including wetting, desizing, biofading, bleaching (optional) and softening. Other colouring factors are explained with the common use of sodium hypochlorite as the oxidizing agent for decolourising the indigo dye as required. It is judged not an eco-friendly procedure. Enzyme use is more environmentally friendly and they can now be used for decolourising purposes, Nordisk A/S - which is explained, and involves the generation of free radicals which attach the indigo dye, converting it to oxidized products. The steps in this system are explained. The effects of Denilite II on the colour is discussed and comparisons with hypochlorite made.
