An overview of acrylic knit apparel processing in India describes pretreatments, including bulking and scouring; dyeing high bulk yarn and acrylic piece goods; dyeing in winch, hand, and paddle dyeing machines; dyeing of acrylic/cellulose, acrylic/wool, acrylic/polyester, and acrylic/nylon blends; chemical finishing with cationic softeners, silicones, and resins; mechanical finishing of tubular and open width fabrics; and printing, including print paste formulations, steaming, and soaping. Improving the quality of acrylic knit fabrics manufactured in India will require proper bulking in the steamer or autoclave, controlled proper bulking in the steamer or autoclave, controlled increases in dyeing temperature, slow cooling of dyed piece goods, finishing under relaxed conditions, and treatments imparting greater shrink resistance. 4 refs.
