An overview of common problems in wet processing provides a diagnostic approach to preventing or solving problems and addresses cationic dye fixing agent mechanisms, lightfastness, shade change, dye competition for substrate sites, methods to maximize color yield, and problem solving methodologies. Some cationic fixing and finishing agents and resin finishes alter color tones. The internal surface areas of cellulosic fiber substrates are not equally accessible to all dyes. The size of the available surface depends on the size and geometry of the dye anions and the internal surface properties of the substrate. All cotton varieties do not yield the same depth of shade from dye recipes. Methods to maximize color yield include selecting dyes that have similar exhaustion properties and substrate preparation to open pores.
