The various resist techniques evident in the dyeing of West African cotton cloth are studied. A thick starch paste coating, freehand painting or stencil/stamp application form the main methods. Areas of the cloth can be closely stitched to prevent dye penetration, patterns can e made from small objects tied into the cloth, it can be tied or knotted, and wax resist is becoming more widely used. Cassava flour is used in Africa but various substances were tried with differing degrees of success. Stitch and tie variations are described. Machine stitching speeds the process but handstitching techniques are also noted with the use of dye resistant thread, strong enough to resist pulling. The making of a sample piece involving folding and stitching is explained. An experimental piece with popcorn kernels tied into the cloth is also discussed. Other effects can be achieved by crumpling, pleating and tightly tying fabric. A marbling effect resulted from velvet stirred in the indigo vat.
