The effect of vinyl graft copolymerisation of itaconic acid onto polyester substrate have been studied to obtain optimum conditions that improve the dyeability of commercial basic dyes. A suitable swelling agent treatment has been given to polyester with N, N’-Dimethyl formamide with a view to achieve maximum graft yield. The grafting of polyester with itaconic acid has been performed using phenyl tertiary butyl peroxide as an initiator. Various physico-mechanical characteristics of grafted substrates have been investigated. The moisture regain increases as graft add-on increases. The tensile strength of polyester grafted with itaconic acid is substantially higher than the ungrafted polyester. Grafted polyester shows good affinity for basic dyes, normally not observed for ungrafted substrate. Fastness characteristics of dyed fabrics have been assessed by standard techniques and are found to be adequate.
