There are some topics in textile processing taught in degree, diploma and other textile-related courses in India and abroad and are considered very important academically. There was a time, when most of these were important industrially also. However, when the eco-friendly concept has become more and more widespread and government and private associations, at first in Europe and then in India and elsewhere have become aware of the toxic, allergenic and carcinogenic nature of chemicals/dyes/pigments and their raw materials, especially certain aromatic amines, used in textile processing, some rethinking has to be made and such hazardous chemicals should be dropped from industrial use and given least importance in academic instructions. An attempt is made in the present series of articles, entitled “Non-eco-friendly textile processing” to take up topics like “Aftertreatments of direct and reactive dyeings” to begin with; “Hazardous metals in dyeing/printing”, “Dyeing of wool with chrome dyes and metal complex dyes”; Carries in polyester dyeing”; and others. The author has teachers and students of textile processing in mind, while writing this series of articles.
