Clearer understanding recently of structural and mechanical features has evolved machines and specific processes for dyeing and finishing knitted fabric. Machinery related aspects of dyeing and recent development in soft dyeing technique are examined. Knitted fabrics and their characteristics are discussed. Knitted fabric is usually dyed in batch process in a soft-flow machine-the main parameters are even dyeing, exhaustion, dye fixation, repeatability, no distortion/abrasion and short cycle. The dyeing process is explained. Seven other important features are also listed, and recent developments in the soft flow dyeing technology, including a flex chamber from Scholl, economic rinsing and dyeing of non heatset cotton-elastomeric fabric. Finishing comprises three operations: de-twisting, opening and squeezing; drying-cum-shrinking; and calendaring and compacting. Drying is the most important and critical operation in finishing, and notes on shrinkage are included. Compaction and shrinkage calendaring are discussed. Other related processes are described, and the importance of good dye-house management emphasized.
