An overview of recent research concerning the modification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers with solvents addresses the solubility parameters; application of the solubility parameter for describing the interaction between PET and solvent; solvent induced crystallization; and issues related to polyester fibers, including density measurements, melting behavior, surface morphology, X-ray analysis, mechanical properties, infrared spectral analyses, and dyeing behavior, surface morphology, X-ray analysis, mechanical properties, infrared spectral analyses, and dyeing behavior. The effects of solvent treatment of PET fibers and films include crystallization, swelling, void formation, and plasticization. Changes in the polymer matrix depend on the closeness of the solubility parameter values of PET and the solvent. Plasticization confers higher dye uptake and better breaking extension. 83 refs.
