The selection of an open width or rope washing machine depends on the fabric to be treated and subsequent processing. The constant movement of the fabric rope and the resultant mechanical forces render rope washing machines more efficient and less costly to operate than open width washing machines. Rope washing machines are inappropriate for the first washing stage after printing, but are superior to open width machines for the fastness wash. Rope washing machines include discontinuous units for limited piece lengths and continuous units that transport the fabric rope from one washing section to the next. Varying the temperature or the washing chemicals in continuous machines achieves a targeted liquor flow. Feeding the liquor counter to the fabric direction reduces water and energy consumption.
