An overview of dyeing fabrics with reactive dyes focuses on diagnosis and prevention of common problems in cold pad batch dyeing processes. Dyeing problems frequently arise from the formulation of dye recipes, alkali proportionator, fabric guides, pad box dwell time, pad box speed and feed rate, laboratory to bulk reproducibility, washing, machine cleaning, and fabric selvage thickness. The ability of the proportionator to pump the required quantity linearly influences dye shade uniformity. Rolls in the pad box facilitate dye penetration, and additional squeeze passages enhance dye penetration. Tables provide quality control check lists for fabric whiteness, yellowness, absorbency, pH, and drying; dye recipes; tank cleaning; silicate strength; dye pad cleanliness; pad box liquor levels; pad box speed; washing; and soaping.
