The main technical, research and industrial applications of enzymes in textile chemistry proceses are reviewed. For cotton and man-made cellulosic fibres, application areas covered include desizing, mercerisation, scouring and bleaching, stone washing and bio-polishing. Work on protein fibres has included non-shrink treatments of wool, wool bleaching, carbonising and finishing and the desizing of silk. Future developments are discussed with the priority areas being the scouring and bleaching of cellulosic fibres and carbonising, bleaching and shrink-resist treatment of wool.
