Some saccharides play important roles in biological recognition on cellular surfaces. Researchers reported that cluster glycosides proved effective in the specific interaction between oligosaccharide chains and receptors. Gene therapy to target cells has become important in medical chemistry. Because chitosan is a cationic natural polysaccharide with formation ability, it is expected to be used as a carrier of DNA in gene delivery systems. Researchers synthesized novel polycationic polysaccharide residues and achieved an efficient gene delivery system by receptor mediated endocytosis. Those conjugates having galactose residues displayed a high affinity to RCA(120) lectin and their polycation-DNA complexes as well as the ability for specific gene delivery to hepatocytes. Abstract.
