Naturally occurring branched polysaccharides are attracting much attention due to their characteristic biological activities and their chemical and physical properties. To prepare branched polysaccharides with some advanced functions, researchers regioselectively branched chitosan and chitin at C-6. The reaction of 3-O-acetyl-2-N-phthaloyl-chitosan with an oxazoline of D-glucosamine yielded branched products. Deprotection resulted in chitosan having beta-D-glucosaminide branches, which ws then transformed into chitin having N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminide branches by N-acetylation. The resulting non-natural branched chitosan and chitin possessed a remarkable affinity for a wide variety of solvents as well as antimicrobial activity. Abstract.
