Researchers analyzed a method of preparing hydrogels via complexation of chitosan and xanthan. Electron microscopy revealed a fibrillar structure with characteristic pore size of 10(-7) and 10(-6) meters. The chitosan-xanthan complex can be used to immobilize xylanase, hemicellulase, hydantoinase, protease, and lipase. The activities of the immobilized enzymes are significantly higher than those of the free enzymes. Theophyline, isosorbite, dinitrate, neomycin, and quinoxaline have been incorporated into the hydrogels. They are released following zero order kinetics. The hydrogels were prepared as beads, microspheres, films, and ophthalmic inserts. The potential of hydrogels as biomedical materials is discussed. Abstract.
