Sun light contains Ultra Violet (UV) rays. prolonged exposure to sunlight means too much exposure to UV-radiation and it results in skin damage such as sunburn, premature skin ageing, allergies and even skin cancer. Textiles can provide effective protection against such damage. UV protecting fabric can be developed by changing chemical structure of constitutent fibres, varying weaving pattern, changing shades in dyeing, or applying suitable finishing agent on fabric. UV-protecting property can be expressed by Ultra-violet Protection Factor (UPF) or by Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Normally, UV-absorbing finishes are used to get better results. This article discusses different development for UV-protection and the different factors available to express the UV-protecting property.
