Antimicrobial protection can be a value added characteristic for textiles. Marketing approaches that emphasize hygiene protection are discussed using the examples of mattresses, athletic wear, and socks. Central to the marketing approach is a clear statement of the benefits of antimicrobial treatment without intimidating consumers. Consumers continue to place more emphasis on functionality, preferring manmade fibers over 100 percent natural fibers. Because antimicrobial agents adhere to the fiber and are not water soluble, protection usually lasts through the lifetime of the product. Two methods provide antimicrobial protection: the use of additives in the melt and the adhesion of agents in the manufacturing cycle.
