Durable and Regenerable Antibacterial Finishing of Fabrics: Chemical Structures.

An innovative finishing method based on the redox reduction of halamine compounds achieves durable and regenerable antibacterial properties on cotton and cotton blend fabrics. Instrumental and chemical analysis, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nitrogen and chlorine elemental analyses, showed the existence of hydantoin rings on cellulose chains and the stability of the linkage between the hydantoin ring and the polymer chain. Polyester/cotton blend fabrics showed more durable biocidal activity than 100 percent cotton fabrics. 16 refs.
