Copper Naphenate is believed to be outdated as a rot-proofing agent and this article discusses possible alternatives such as phenols, chlorinated phenols and phenoxy alcohols. Several studies were conducted on these agents using the soil burial test which has the advantages of simulating the natural conditions that textiles would otherwise have to face. Results showed that chlorinated phenoxy alcohol (RP-1) and non-chlorinated phenoxy alcohol (RP-11) produced good levels of protection when compared to copper naphthenate and these levels increased with concentration. In concentrations of 1% and 2% of RP-1 and RP-11 the breaking strength of the fabric improved. It is suggested that these compounds created an invisible protective layer over the fabric, helping to protect it from rotting.
