Kimberly-Clark's patented antimicrobial process involves coating such antimicrobial agents as chitosan and other chitin based materials onto a substrate with a hydrophobic surface. Coating polypropylene nonwoven fabrics via this process yields liners for diapers, incontinence pads, and feminine hygiene products. The effectiveness of the process depends in part on the hydrophobicity of the substrate surface and the thickness of the coating. Thin coatings are more effective than thick coatings. In diaper linings, crosslinking agents bind the chitosan to the substrate so that urine does not wash it away.
