magnesium hydroperoxyacetate (MHPA), the reaction product of magnesium acetate tetrahydrate and hydrogen peroxide, imparts antimicrobial properties to cotton blend nonwoven fabrics. Spraying MHPA on cotton/polyester blend fabrics, followed by drying, curing, and needle punching yielded nonwoven fabrics with excellent antimicrobial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Differential scanning calorimetry monitored MHPA composition, and iodometric titration determined the peroxide content of the MHPA and the treated nonwoven fabrics. Treated fabrics had air permeability, stiffness, and bursting strength similar to those of untreated needle punched fabrics. Applications include filtration media, disposable blankets, insulation, and automotive components. 4 refs.
