Cotton and cotton/polyester blend fabrics treated with 1,3-dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantion (DMDMH) in 2 percent and 6 percent concentrations for 2 minutes had good resistance to gram negative and gram positive bacteria as well as fungi. The finish was durable for more than 50 machine washes and had low skin irritation and toxicity. Fabrics treated with DMDMH and a water resistant finish had 100 percent reduction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria after 50 washes. Cotton/polyester blend fabrics treated with water resistant and DMDMH finishes had better antibacterial and water resistance properties than did cotton fabrics subjected to the same treatment. Chlorine bleaching extended the durability of the finish. 10 refs.
