FiberMark Incorporated's treatment confers antiviral and antimicrobial properties to fabrics. The treatment consists of a light activated dye acting alone or in combination with conventional antimicrobial agents. A cationic or anionic binder binds the dye. The dye does not leach. When exposed to light, the dye generates singlet oxygen that kills microorganisms. The process can be used to treat woven or nonwoven fabrics. A variety of dyes can be used to provide protection against Staphylococcus aureas, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus epidermis, Serratia marcescens, Myobacterium bovis, methicillium resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Proteus vulgaris. The dyes might also prove effective against viruses, particularly enveloped viruses. The process bears United States patent 6,239,048.
