A method for generating active species with one atmosphere uniform glow discharge plasma (OAUGDP), a nonthermal fourth state plasma with properties similar to those of a conventional glow discharge plasma at standard atmospheric pressure, sterilized and increased the wettability, surface energy, and wicking properties of nonwoven fabrics. Exposure to OAUGDP generated small increases in surface energy after a few minutes. Most high surface energies, however, were not stable and decreased to 50 dynes per centimeter after weeks or months. OAUGDP sterilized both porous and nonporous fabrics at standard temperature and pressure, killing bacterial vegetative cells, bacterial endospores, viruses, and fungi. Improvements to the Mod IV reactor reduced treatment time. 38 refs.
