An experiments synthesized hinokitiol (4-isopropyltropolene) intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) via the calcination and rehydration reaction using M(2+)-AI(3)-CO(3)(2)LDHs and determined the properties and resultant LDH. Calcinated products obtained from Mg(2+)-AI(3+) and Zn(2)-AI(3+) LDHs reconstructed to form the hinokitiol intercalated LDS. Increasing the relative quantity of the hinokitiol solution increased the amount of intercalated hinokitiol. The LDH particles released hinokitiol in the interlayer via ion exchange. The thermal decomposition temperature of the LDH was higher than that of hinokitiol alone. Antibacterial tests using Escherichia coli established a minimum inhibitory concentration at 800 milligrams per deciliter of the total hinokitiol concentration. 26 refs.
