Bayer Corp has developed a treatment to make cotton-based textiles easier to care for and more comfortable to wear. In US Patent 6 336 943, the company from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, says that giving the fibres a permanent anionic charge makes them more resistant to staining. Moreover, the treatment allows the fibres to absorb greater amounts of cationic softeners and bactericides. As the negative charges repel each other, the fabric has a greater loft and hydrophilicity. In turn, this means it is smoother, has better handle and more comfortable to wear. The treatment can also make carpets resistant to anionic staining, the Patent says. Another advantage of the treatment is that it impedes the ability of colours on the same garment to bleed into one another.
