A review of the nonwovens industry in the United States and Europe focuses on the accomplishments of such companies as Avondale, Du Pont, and Freudengerg since the 1930s. Of all the potential markets initially targeted by nonwovens manufacturers, only some have been very successful. Among the successes are diapers, interlinings, and surgical products. Among the failures are apparel, bed linens, and bath towels. The successes, however, have been sufficient to drive the phenomenal growth in this sector since the 1950s. For this growth to continue, manufacturers must develop new products, rather than rely on substituting nonwovens for conventional textiles. Problems in other industries should serve as a warning to increase efficiency and effectivenes in management, marketing, and research.
