Armstrong World Industries recently developed a fabric wallboard consists of a layer of pressure bondable polyester/polypropylene needle punched felt that is attached to a rigid substrate. Field tests used needle punched 96/4 polyester/polypropylene felt (264 grams per square meter), transfer printed with a flannel design on the facing side and coated on the reverse with a vinyl acrylic latex compound(101 grams per square meter). An indentically printed and mounted polyester fabric served as a control. The field tests showed that the new wallboard was between two and three times as resistant to abrasion as the control. Armstrong's acoustical wallboard bears United States patent number 5,178,939.
