The nonwovens industry is studying the market potential for its products in construction. Conventional uses include house wrap material and insulation. However, researchers, manufacturers, and architects are collaborating to considerably widen these uses. Some of their ideas comprise an exhibit titled Fabrics-in-Construction, which has been shown at IDEA '92 and the National Association of Homebuilders convention. A major area of research is in fabric reinforced cementitious composites(FRCCs), which have a virtually unlimited potential in construction. Developed by Schupack Suarez Engineers, FRCCs consist of a high loft nonwoven and a cement mix made with a portion of coal ash. FRCCs are a very durable, noncompbustible thin sheet product with such uses as plywood substitutes, siding, and roofing shingles.
