Chemical treatments of nonwoven fabrics that differed in the binding method and fiber type involved the use of solutions containing polyethylene glycol, glycolated/alkylated dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, and an acid catalyst (para-toluenesulfonic acid). Curing to insolubilize the polyol onto the substrates followed this treatment. Scanning electron microscopy established the location and distribution of the crosslinked polyol. Distribution was related to the liquid absorbency, thermal storage and release, and stiffness of the treated fabrics. Applications for these modified nonwovens include several biomedical and consumer products. Abstract.
