Pore structure influences the physical and mechanical properties of nonwoven fabrics, including permeability. Conventional methods for determining pore size, such as sieving or hydrodynamic filtration, fail to identify pore shape characteristics. Researches developed invariant methods for the automated characterization of pore shapes by subjecting geometrical attributes, such as projected width, area, perimeter, and average diameter, to Fourier analysis. The researchers used a computer controlled image analysis system (developed at the University of Maryland's Applied Imaging Laboratory) to examine a series of simulated fabric images with varying density and fiber orientation. Results indicated that pore shapes change according to fiber orientation. 13 refs.
