An analysis of the medical/surgical market for nonwoven fabrics in Japan reveals that demand is dominated by drapes (35 percent), sheets (18 percent), gowns (16 percent), and gauze (11 percent). Nearly 80 percent of the nonwoven fabric used in drapes and sheets is spunlaced. Although nonwovens were introduced into medical and surgical products in Japan in the 1970s, it was not until 1985 that demand became significant and featured high annual growth rates of between 15 and 20 percent. In 1993, the medical/surgical market for nonwovens totaled approximately 19 billion yen. Leading suppliers of nonwoven fabrics in Japan include Baxter. Daiei, Hogy Medical, J&&J Medical, Japan Medico, and Kawamoto Bandage Material.
