Although the drafting process does not permit the predetermination of cross direction and machine direction values, developments in nonwovens have created the need for fiber oriented felts that behave equally in all directions under tension. By combining a batt drafting machine with the ability to crosslap at high speeds, Asselin has developed a process for creating a crosslapped batting that enables a predetermined cross direction and machine direction fiber orientation. This capability allows a finished product to be manufactured without drafting, eliminating the effects that draft has on side to side weight uniformity and permitting optimal line speeds regardless of fiber denier.
