Characterizing nonwoven web structure using image analysis techniques. Ⅳ. Fibre diameter analysis for spunbonded webs

An investigation into the feasibility of using a personal computer-based instrument and image analysis techniques to accurately and comprehensively characterize major structural features of nonwoven webs is presented. These include pores, fibre orientation, web uniformity, fibre diameter and defects. This paper reports results on fibre diameter analysis from spunbonded webs. A software package was produced that provided measurements in terms of the mean fibre diameter, coefficient of diameter variation and a plot of the diameter distribution. The accuracy of the software was experimentally evaluated by determining the computational efficiency and error rate of the single fibre classifier and comparing diameter measurements determined automatically to those obtained by manual microscope measurements.
