Researchers used a two dimensional model constructed of a network of spring-damper-friction elements to describe the stress-strain behavior of nonwoven fabrics. Single fiber properties, a global fiber orientation distribution function, and bonding point patterns were used to develop the model parameters. The model predicted the mechanical properties of nonwoven fabrics and was useful in the development of processing calculations via the finite element method. The finite element method proved to be a satisfactory strategy in the prediction and engineering of the mechanical properties of thermal bonded fabrics. The method demonstrated the potential to control fiber alignment and bonding patterns for specified stress-strain curves as well as determining fiber selection. 6 refs.
