Researchers measured and compared the mechanical, absorbency, and moisture transmission properties of samples of mostly commercial nonwoven fabrics. The range of manufacturing technologies represented by the samples were carding/thermal bonding; carding/latex bonding; carding/crosslapping/needle punching; carding/spunlacing; wet laying/chemical bonding; spunbonding/thermal bonding; melt blowing; flash spinning; and laminating. Fabric structure varied significantly in such properties as thickness, basis weight, bulk density, air permeability, and optical and mechanical anisotropy. Laser diffraction estimated the fiber orientation distribution functions of the samples. The research yielded critical information on the capabilities of these manufacturing technologies. 9 refs.
