A review of the applications of nonwoven fabrics includes such end uses as roofing, wrapping, and geotextiles. The contribution of nonwoven fabrics to these markets includes economic manufacturing and performance. The dimensional stability of nonwovens makes them suitable as a carpet backing material. Their strength makes them well suited to the manufacture of furniture, bedding, and other home furnishings products. Spun bonded polyester and polypropylene are widely used in roofing applications. These nonwoven fabrics are carriers for bituminous waterproofing membranes and provide integrity and dimensional stability to the bitumen. Needle punched fabrics made from staple fibers and spun bonded continuous filament fabrics offer strength, stability, and water permeability in geotextile applications.
