The use of foam technology in the manufacture of nonwoven fabrics significantly expands the range of end prodcuts and their applications. These end products include composites, coated fabric with a different coating on each side, and saturated products. A major operational advantage of foam technology is its low enrgy consumption and high process speeds. One of the most important process parameters is the depth of foam penetration, which is cotrolled by the type of foam and the set-up of the applicator. Variables that affect penetration include foam surface tension, contact angle with the fibrous web, density, stability, and bulk viscosity. The major processes used in foam technology are foam generation and foam application. The foam genrator mixes the gas and liquid and, by various shearing methods, disperses the gas through the liquid. The applicator distributes the foam onto the substrate surface.
