Absorbent characteristics of nonwovens containing cellulosic fibers

Nonwoven fabrics containing high micronaire cotton, low micronaire cotton, regular rayon and modified rayon fibers were studied for their absorbent behavior. The webs containing each of these fibers as well as their blends were produced by a carding process and needled. Measurements of absorbency were carried out with water and saline on a demand wettability device under two different environmental pressures. The parameters assessed were the absorbent capacity and the rate of absorbency. The effects observed were modeled using classical theories, modified to apply to thin porous webs of the study.
